Houston, Texas – A dog’s pitiful condition is so extreme that it is hard to believe she is alive. The dog, Penelope, weighs just 10 pounds. According to Caitie’s Foster Fam Rescue, Penelope was adopted four years ago as a puppy…today she is an emaciated skeleton.
The rescue agency said:
“How is she even alive?” were the first words out of our mouths when the shelter sent a picture of Penelope. Because there aren’t words to describe just how awful of shape she’s in. Emaciated, starved.
Explaining why details about Penelope’s situation cannot be disclosed publicly:
While we are always transparent (sometimes overly so) with the rescue intakes, we will never sensationalize things. We will never add details to their case that we don’t know, and we will never make up stories. But sometimes we have to withhold details if it affects an active investigation. Since Penelope’s is an open cruelty case, we can’t share many details yet about how she ended up at the shelter.
On Wednesday, a day after the initial post about the frail dog, the rescue organization posted a promising update about Penelope, writing:
Everyone deserves a Penelope update because that intake picture was gut-wrenching. But our girl is STRONG!
Penelope was immediately hospitalized (with visits from her foster mama), and she has shocked us all by how well she is doing. Her spirits have been high, and she is stable. She is walking on her own. We truly can’t believe it. She is a fighter, and she knows how much she is loved now. With how thin she is, she is still at a risk of re-feeding. This means she is on a specific food plan of small meals spread throughout the day. Feeding too much too quickly can shock their bodies and send them into organ failure.
