Senoia, Georgia – A Georgia family who paid a veterinary hospital to put down their ailing, elderly cat in February 2025 learned the cat was still alive 18 months later. According to sources, Annie was 19 years old when she was taken to the Senoia Animal Hospital to be euthanized.
The Jagt family, who had owned Annie since 2006, believed her quality of life had deteriorated to the point that euthanasia was the kindest option. According to her owner, Brian Jagt, Annie was struggling with arthritis, had a poor appetite, was having difficulty getting around and had become increasingly disoriented.
Jagt signed the euthanasia authorization, paid approximately $300 for the procedure and communal cremation, and left the hospital believing he had said goodbye to his beloved cat. Clinic records listed Annie as deceased that day.
But Annie wasn’t dead.
Instead, she remained alive and, according to records and police reports, continued living with a Senoia Animal Hospital employee for the next year and a half. During that time, Annie was reportedly brought back to the same veterinary hospital for ongoing care, including blood work, kidney monitoring, injections and other treatments.
Meanwhile, her original family had no idea.
That changed in July 2026, when their friend, veterinary technician Courtney Bassin, began working at the hospital. Bassin knew the Jagt family and had known Annie before her supposed death. Brian’s son, Tyler Jagt, was eventually told the shocking news by Bassin.
When Tyler Jagt mentioned that his family had already lost Annie, Bassin said the reaction from her coworkers seemed strange. She eventually learned the unimaginable truth, that Annie was still alive. Bassin told Tyler, “I don’t know how to tell you this, but Annie’s alive.”
The shocking news prompted Annie’s original family to contact the police.
According to the Senoia Police Department report, a detective went to the hospital on August 12 and spoke with employees, who acknowledged that Annie was alive and living with a staff member. The hospital maintained that a veterinarian had determined euthanasia was not warranted and that employees were attempting to help Annie rather than deceive her.
But the family had not asked the hospital to save Annie, they had asked the hospital to euthanize her because they believed that her quality of life was poor.
The hospital later acknowledged that it had “fell short in honoring the trust the family placed in us” and said its policies had been reinforced to ensure clients’ decisions regarding their pets are respected. The family was also refunded the money they had paid for Annie’s euthanasia and cremation.
The family ultimately asked for Annie to be euthanized as originally requested and for her body to be returned to them. On August 13, approximately 18 months after they believed they had said goodbye, Tyler saw Annie again. He said the elderly cat was smaller, confused and did not appear to recognize him.
Annie was euthanized that morning.
Tyler later told The Citizen that the part he cannot stop thinking about is that Annie may have believed her family abandoned her when they left her at the veterinary hospital in February 2025. “She thought we just left her one day,” he said. And that may be the most heartbreaking part of this story.
The family thought they had given Annie a peaceful goodbye. Instead, more than a year later, they were forced to say goodbye again.

Its unfortunate so many commentators are of the sort that would potentially keep a suffering animal alive. If the Vet had refused to euthanize, the family would have gone somewhere else. I did know od a caring Vet who passed away, who hated to euthanize and let at least two animals of mine, by talking me out of euthanasia, two pets of mine deteriorated rapidly and did suffer at the end, There are Vets that do not always euthanize when they should, just as there are people. I knew one family who would claim a certain terminally ill cat had died ‘peacefully’ at home when it was suffering. No such thing- that cat suffered. Kidney failure to the point of jaundice and cancer is painful. I believe in euthanizing terminally ill pets before they are in the throws of worse pain and suffering- their last memories of life on earth should not be miserable, when they are too ill to appreciate their owners’ presence, when they are too ill to receice comfort. In this case we can’t be sure of how much the cat was suffering because there are Vets that do not always euthanize when they should.
The family DID abandon Annie by not remaining by her side, comforting & making her feel ‘protected by the only persons she felt safe with. Instead leaving her in a strange place & @ the mercy of total strangers & she not knowing why. That’s something you don’t do to an animal who can’t understand why you’re ‘abandoning’ her all of a sudden. Owner could’ve either remained, like I always did, when my animal’s time had come, or had my vet come to my house to perform the coup de gras. It’s called empathy, for a very much “sentient” fellow being.
Eighteen months is the part I can’t get past. You hand over a 19-year-old cat, you pay, you grieve, and then the record says otherwise. That’s not a billing error, that’s a family sitting with a funeral that never happened.
I help out at a small rescue, and this week I was putting together a flyer for our Saturday adoption table. I typed one sentence into ShimmerPic, got back a laid-out poster with the headline type and colors already chosen, and it was close enough to print after one edit. The fine print at the bottom, the date and address, drifted into the border the first time and needed a second run. Same thing I’d tell anyone with a vet: keep your own copy of the paperwork.
the family is shitty. and your spam advertising of Ai is no better. Get off
Right?? Ugh
That family did not deserve Annie. Nor do they deserve to have another animal ever again. To abandon their ailing fur baby like that and then blame the vet who out of compassion spared this kitty from euthanasia and gave her another year and a half of love and care? The least they could do was to let her live out her time in peace with that angel of a veterinarian. But no – they insisted on having her euthanized again. Only a scumbag would do something like this. And now they are acting like they’re heartbroken because Annie might have thought they left her? Wtf? That’s exactly what you did! And worse – you demanded to have her killed even though she could have lived longer under the loving care of this vet. I think I am going to write an email to this veterinary hospital and tell them how much I love and admire what this vet did.
I 💯 agree with everything you said. I was thinking the exact same. You put every thought and feeling I had and put these into words. However I would add one idea. That the vet clinic should have stood up to the family and stood by their decision to keep her alive and refunded the money quicker. As long as she’s walking and using the bathroom, she should continue to live out her life naturally. They should have a policy that states they will not euthanize pets who are not considered by the vet to be necessary. Just because a cat is confused and smaller doesn’t mean they need to be killed. Even if they are not eating and drinking on their own, they can be fed. Although that takes a ton of work I’ve done it. I feel if they can have hospice care because they are still walking and using potty they should be given that. Or if not walking etc taken to a holistic vet to see if the root and be discovered to fix that. All avenues should be covered. If all fails then euthanasia is provided. People are too quick to kill their pets.
Totally agree. They walked out on her and was bent out of shape when they found out that someone cared enough to give her the chance to live. I truly hate most HUMANS. These people are on my list.

Agree…they didn’t want to spen their time or money helping her -typical suspects
I agree. The other thing is, when you have your cat PTS , you stay with your cat until the end. You don’t just leave your cat with the vet to euthanise and then walk out. Vets hate it when people don’t stay with their animals until the end. It’s not fair on the vet and it’s horrible for the animal to die without their family there. What kind of scumbag would not stay with their cat until the end. And for $300 they could have bought some Antinol or other joint oil and omega oil for cognitive decline.
I always stay with my dog…when quality of life is gone and suffering obvious. I caress its head and whisper its name while saying I love you.
I totally agree
Agree 100% w/ what you’re saying. & how fortunate for Annie she got left w/ a special & rare veterinarian.

These owners are a disgrace to pet parents everywhere. I would have given anything for my furbabies to have another 18 months of loving care. As if we were in any doubt how heartless they are the fact that after finding she was still alive they insisted on killing her proves it all.
I don’t understand why any owner of a pet would not stay and comfort the pet, even if that means sitting on the floor while they cross the Rainbow Bridge and speak comforting words to the pet. I have done this more times than I can count, sobbed as my heart was being ripped to shreds, but always stayed with my pet. my head understood why, just wish it would explain it to my heart. these pets love so much, why would anyone not stay till they pass!
Yes a human companion should comfort their pet during euthanasia!! Too many people do choose death over the effort and expense of caring for an elderly pet. The vet was also legally wrong to not assist the family and still charge a fee while lying. Part of the problem is that pets are considered property of their “owners” and therefore afforded few protections. Lobby for that to change. Two wrongs don’t make a right in this case!

I agree with every statement. And I’m sorry that now the clinic ‘follows the directions ‘ given them. The owners are Not trained in veterinary care. They were just tired of dealing with an elderly cat. And then as soon as they found out the cat was still alive, they demanded, and got law enforcement involved. Then the cat was killed immediately. The vet tech gave that cat a good home, continual medical care and LOVE for 18 Months. The tech should have been given a huge thank you. All they wanted was her death, not that she was given a second chance and happy twilight years. Poor kitty…
Agree with you totally. The original owners are heartless pieces of human filth, a lifetime ban from pet ownership is what needs to be placed on them.. the tech that took the cat to love should be thanked, not terminated. The owners received the monies back and should have left the cat and new owner alone.
How awful!! HORRIBLE owners and I pray they never have another cat again!!!! They should have been happy their pet wasn’t dead, but first of all you left your cat to die ALONE! and second you didn’t notice that no ashes were returned or you just didn’t want them?? She probably just had some cognitive decline which doesn’t mean that this poor cat needed TO DIE!!!! I pray that karma heard this story and paid it back 10fold.
Bless the hospital and staff member for giving her more life, and I send them prayers as they most likely are mourning this beautiful kitty 🙁 The home she should have had originally.
That stupid family should not complain, they left their cat to die alone, what kind of person does this??? I think the employee who took her home just wanted to save her, because her family wanted to get rid of her…..
You don’t just leave your beloved pet at the vet to be euthanised all alone then forget all about receiving their cremated remains.
They said she would have thought they just left her alone by one of the staff kindly taking her in NO she would have thought my family left me here to be killed that’s worse!
She clearly wasn’t ready to die the family obviously had no more time for her and that’s a fact!
Poor kitty 🙁
I totally agree with you!! I’ve NEVER just left a pet to die alone, I have always stayed right there to the painful end.

This! Shitty owners that should shame!
Why on earth would they leave her to be euthanized all alone? It’s hard to do but everyone I know has held their pet and stayed with them until they passed. Of course she felt abandoned and that responsibility rests right on her irresponsible owners! Shame on them!

Agreed!!!!
Exactly!!! Selfish self-serving jerks.

Are people on crack. That baby was not living quality of life. Did u read the article, when u look into their eyes, u know. I’m 53 yrs old. I have had lots of animals and everytime I put their quality of life before my selfishness of keeping them alive. Some people can’t watch there animals being layed to rest, I stay, hell I’ve helped my friends that couldn’t do it. We can’t jay our loved ones to rest when their quality of life is a shell, I’ll be damned if I can’t with my animals. No worker is going to be with my animals but me, if I look into my babies eyes and he/she lets me know they just can’t any more, I will not let them suffer. I would have went to jail. It’s hard enough the first time, but the second, hell no.
the vet tech took the time and effort to care for the cat and she lived another 18 months and should still be living. the original family should have left her with the vet tech to live out her life.
I agree. The vet tech was kind, compassionate. The original family never should have had that cat.
That selfish family didn’t want to be bothered with caring for an elderly cat. They tossed her away like garbage. None of them stayed with her. The vet knew the cat wasn’t ready to die. They should have refunded the money right away. I hope karma gets them good!
Agree totally. They just didn’t want to deal with it, then forced them to kill her for no legitimate reason. I hope they are treated the same as they age in a nursing home. I feel so sad for that vet tech that obviously loved her, and I pray that the person that provided this information to these heartless previous owners was fired and never works with animals again. This cat’s senseless death is also on her hands.
I agree!! They killed her ONLY because they wanted her to die and no other legitimate reason. This is murder, not compassion. I feel so awful for the vet tech that obviously loved her more than her previous owners.
I agree. It’s disturbing to know that they insisted on the cat being put down “because they know best”.

You just drop your pet off and say euthanize and no I don’t want the ashes back? What is wrong with you! You related to that heartless family?!!! You are on crack! Grow a heart!
Bullcrap! this girl lived an extra 18 months no thanks to her pathetic owners. I can’t stand people who euthanize for no medical reason other than they ‘think the cat looks sad’ or some stupid reason like that. Quality of life by human standards?? This is such crap. They FORCED this cat to die for no legitimate medical reason. The poor kitty probably just had dementia which can be helped with omega 3s, we reversed my girls dementia that way. My girl passed naturally in my arms when she was 18 and her Drs confirmed she was not in pain. People are so euthanasia obsessed. She probably wanted nothing to do with her awful previous owners and that’s why she didn’t acknowledge them.
Candra, u would definitely in Netherlands where children up to 12 years old can be legally euthanized without their permission.
I trust vets. and vets could not do what this shitty family was ok with because of their laziness. Extra care. they are most likely were given a choice: taking care of their kitty (which is extra work) or euthanize.
why couldn’t they be happy that Annie was getting help and treatment. and she was living with someone who cared for her enough to get her help and give her 18 more months of life. why did she have to be put down. the original owners where reimbursed their money. why could they leave her with the new family. I think it sucks they just left her there to be put down all alone. it was wrong that the vet took that money for something they never did. Annie should still be alive with her new owner.
i agree with you. the original family should be ashamed. maybe they didn’t want to bother with treatment and the expense. it’s wonderful that she was cared for and got another 18 months of life and she should not have been euthanized in the end, that should have been up to the vet tech who took the time and effort to care for her.
I agree. It’s disturbing to know that they insisted on the cat being put down “because they know best”.

What a bunch of pieces of shit lowlife scum to WANT to kill the cat who apparently wasn’t ready to go but yet they had 2x to want to kill her??? May they die 100x harder and alone they should have left Annie with the person who truly loved her! And fuck the idiot who ratted her out to the family he should hang the back stabbing bitch!
