Senoia, Georgia – A Georgia family who paid a veterinary hospital to put down their ailing, elderly cat in February 2025 learned the cat was still alive 18 months later. According to sources, Annie was 19 years old when she was taken to the Senoia Animal Hospital to be euthanized.
The Jagt family, who had owned Annie since 2006, believed her quality of life had deteriorated to the point that euthanasia was the kindest option. According to her owner, Brian Jagt, Annie was struggling with arthritis, had a poor appetite, was having difficulty getting around and had become increasingly disoriented.
Jagt signed the euthanasia authorization, paid approximately $300 for the procedure and communal cremation, and left the hospital believing he had said goodbye to his beloved cat. Clinic records listed Annie as deceased that day.
But Annie wasn’t dead.
Instead, she remained alive and, according to records and police reports, continued living with a Senoia Animal Hospital employee for the next year and a half. During that time, Annie was reportedly brought back to the same veterinary hospital for ongoing care, including blood work, kidney monitoring, injections and other treatments.
Meanwhile, her original family had no idea.
That changed in July 2026, when their friend, veterinary technician Courtney Bassin, began working at the hospital. Bassin knew the Jagt family and had known Annie before her supposed death. Brian’s son, Tyler Jagt, was eventually told the shocking news by Bassin.
When Tyler Jagt mentioned that his family had already lost Annie, Bassin said the reaction from her coworkers seemed strange. She eventually learned the unimaginable truth, that Annie was still alive. Bassin told Tyler, “I don’t know how to tell you this, but Annie’s alive.”
The shocking news prompted Annie’s original family to contact the police.
According to the Senoia Police Department report, a detective went to the hospital on August 12 and spoke with employees, who acknowledged that Annie was alive and living with a staff member. The hospital maintained that a veterinarian had determined euthanasia was not warranted and that employees were attempting to help Annie rather than deceive her.
But the family had not asked the hospital to save Annie, they had asked the hospital to euthanize her because they believed that her quality of life was poor.
The hospital later acknowledged that it had “fell short in honoring the trust the family placed in us” and said its policies had been reinforced to ensure clients’ decisions regarding their pets are respected. The family was also refunded the money they had paid for Annie’s euthanasia and cremation.
The family ultimately asked for Annie to be euthanized as originally requested and for her body to be returned to them. On August 13, approximately 18 months after they believed they had said goodbye, Tyler saw Annie again. He said the elderly cat was smaller, confused and did not appear to recognize him.
Annie was euthanized that morning.
Tyler later told The Citizen that the part he cannot stop thinking about is that Annie may have believed her family abandoned her when they left her at the veterinary hospital in February 2025. “She thought we just left her one day,” he said. And that may be the most heartbreaking part of this story.
The family thought they had given Annie a peaceful goodbye. Instead, more than a year later, they were forced to say goodbye again.

FUCK that shitty family…. they just didn’t want to be bothered caring for an elderly cat; they didn’t even stay with the cat at what was supposed to be the end. I hope their kids do the same thing to them wheny they are old.
God bless that kind veterinary worker who gave Annie love and more time and put the effort into taking care of her. I hope she didn’t get in trouble – she deserves an AWARD for the kindness she did.
And the turd on top of the cake is this shitty family made SURE their cat was killed again. Rotten cold-hearted bastards.
This family is scum. Leave the cat where it was and let it live obviously it wasn’t time. You’re selfish!
This scumbag family need to be euthanized and not this lovely poor cat.
This is complicated! First, the family was seeing the progression of decline of their cat. The family cited arthritis, poor appetite, disoriented as reasons to let her go. Now, they could have done some bloodwork as and ear infection or UTI will cause disorientation and poor appetite. We are not told if there were any offers of options. However, had they stayed with her or talked with the vet, they would had knowledge of her outcome. That being said, had they offered to treat, they may have taken her to another vet. when the jig was up, the family should have left her where she was. They were not interested in taking her home and she was obviously so disoriented before they took her in that she had lost all recognition of them? She could have had a few more years. Such a sad story. Honestly for the cat and the person who took her in. $300 would have likely covered her meds and office call. Maybe vets should put Euthanasia/Surrender on their paperwork..

So the cat was still alive, GOOD! What a conceited family! Now you want her killed AGAIN! You gave up your right to her, sure they should have had you sign a surrender form, but the cat is still alive and YES you did abandon her. I am glad the tech cared about your cat is caring for her. WHAT A POS family. You should be happy she is still alive, you just didn’t want to spend all the money on monthly testing, etc. To call the police again what a crappy family you are
It’s difficult to side with the family on this. Obviously they poorly evaluated the cat’s health considering how much longer the cat continued to live. The concerns about abandonment wouldn’t have surfaced if the family wasn’t spineless and was there with their cat at the very end. I have no use for people who hand over their pets for euthanasia and then walk out. Be there for your friend until the end, otherwise it’s no different than abandonment. This was a pathetic, heartless family.
Owners should not be allowed to walk into a clinic and pay to have their animal put down without the vet seeing the animal first to offer a professional opinion on whether or not euthanasia needs to be done. Euthanasia should only be allowed to happen if the vet agrees the animal is suffering and not treatable. If the vet thinks the animal can be saved, and the owners don’t want to save it, they should be required to relinquish ownership of the animal to the veterinary clinic. Think about this: many of us don’t want shelter animals being put down for no good reason; we ought to also be pushing for the same “no kill” standards for owned pets! Economic “euthanasia” and “euthanasia” for convenience need to be stopped and relegated to the litterbox of history!
I’m with you on that! Owners who do that should surrender their pet to the vets, and then euthanized themselves!
euthanize the whole DEVIL jagt family for paying to murder their cat. This hospital & vets should be given a medal for saving & taking good care of the cat

Seems like Annie got better care and love “after death” from the vet tech. Bless her.
What this story TRULY SAYS that most Ignore : Humans think they have the Right take another living being LIFE because its become an “inconvenience” to Us.
I happen to know of Several clinics who have rehomed and help many animals go on to have a very happy Second life with a human family NOT intent on murdering them at the end, and not letting nature take its course. Please, Dont Help me……my god, your “help” is Killing? I am geared the Whole other direction and fight for life. Raised on a working farm, we did everything we possibly Could to help our animals at every stage of their life, we were raised to Respect and be in Awe of that special spark, we call Life, that cannot be replicated. I find no fault with the clinic, they see the truly sick and dying every day, this cat was Not one of them. I have a 29 year old hemmingway cat that came With my house 15 years ago, her partner just passed two weeks ago, and I fought two major infections with that cat for a couple of years, and she kept bouncing back. I am sorry for the family, dont care what they are saying, their ACTIONS tell the truth, they wanted the cat DEAD, so clear conscience, thats it. I would have wanted to See and hold my baby again….what happend to That? Be kind to one another, you never know what kind of battle others are fighting at home, and often alone.
I agree 100% obviously that vet assistant had access to care and was willing to put the time and money into that senior cat . Shame on them for deciding we’re done and don’t even stick around to watch her go… We recently put down a cat that was failing we stayed with her and it was heartbreaking. That decision was based on a thorough bloodwork and exam of our 16-year-old cat with the Vet. We waited another four weeks because she was still eating and functioning, and we were assured she was not in pain. When she stopped eating for 3 days that was the sign to let go. At least our cat knew at the end we were there and not total strangers were holding her while they put her down.
The deceit of keeping the $300 is suspect, but obviously that cat lived for 18 more months…
If I have to put one of my pets down, I would stay with them and hold them until the end. Let them know they are loved and will be missed. (Also make sure they are put down as painlessly as possible.)
All you people who do not stay with your furbabies during the euthanasia , you are very selfish. I hope when your turn cones up, you die alone or with strangers . If this owner would have stayed, there would be no story. STAY.
Yep
Yep
Agreed. We MUST stay with them until the end.

Agree completely, fully and wholly! I do agree that any vet who doesn’t think an animal should be euthanized, shouldn’t do it. I would have told the owners to surrender her so she could be given meds, treatments, etc. Instead the vet returned the cat and they had her killed regardless – I think just out of spite to show the vet and the vet tech that adopted her, they’d do as they pleased. I would never, ever have returned that innocent cat to the hateful owners.
asshole family they could have been so happy that their senior cat was alive and well but they refused and killed her cause why she didbt recognize them and probably didn’t want to after you’re right abandoned to die alone
I agree, I would have been estatic to see and hold her again, way before I got mad about anything… what happened to Those feelings here?
