Mohawk, New York – A senior German shepherd was skin and bones by the time she was found in a home by the side of her deceased owner. According to the Herkimer County Humane Society, the 8–9-year-old shepherd, Astrid, had been in the home for “far too long” before the tragic situation was known.

In a social media post, the animal welfare agency said:
This is Astrid.
She weighs just 28 pounds.
Astrid isn’t just another intake, she is the kind that stays with you
She was found lying next to her deceased owner… and had been there for far too long.
No food.
No help.
No one coming.
Her body is so starved that even eating something so basic could kill her if it’s not done slowly and carefully. That’s what refeeding looks like at this stage: controlled, monitored, life-or-death with every meal.
Astrid is tired and weak – and she is grieving the loss of her home and her person. But she is safe now and the staff at the animal shelter is working to help Astrid as her body and heart heal from the hurt she has endured.
Sending you love sweet Astrid.
