Mohawk, New York – A senior German shepherd was skin and bones by the time she was found in a home by the side of her deceased owner. According to the Herkimer County Humane Society, the 8–9-year-old shepherd, Astrid, had been in the home for “far too long” before the tragic situation was known.

In a social media post, the animal welfare agency said:
This is Astrid.
She weighs just 28 pounds.
Astrid isn’t just another intake, she is the kind that stays with you
She was found lying next to her deceased owner… and had been there for far too long.
No food.
No help.
No one coming.
Her body is so starved that even eating something so basic could kill her if it’s not done slowly and carefully. That’s what refeeding looks like at this stage: controlled, monitored, life-or-death with every meal.
Astrid is tired and weak – and she is grieving the loss of her home and her person. But she is safe now and the staff at the animal shelter is working to help Astrid as her body and heart heal from the hurt she has endured.
Sending you love sweet Astrid.

Shame on people nearby, family and friends not checking on lonely people animals are true blue loyal he didn’t bark to get help… just stayed with his deceased person, so very sad that people can hurt these beautiful souls! That’s why I say kill whoever does because they’re evil and don’t respect life for an animal or person! Get rid of these scumbags. Pray this pup gets a new loving home 🙏

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL ‘ UNWAVERING’ SOUL!!!
IT TEACHES US TO LOOK IN ON OUR NEIGHBORS AND THOSE WHO HAVE NO ONE WHO CARES ABOUT THEM AND Karen ARE MANY IN THIS WORLD TODAY!!!!
IT TAKES BUT A FEW MOMENTS JUST TO CARE ABOUT THOSE NEAR US AND AROUND US TO ‘POP IN’ TO kCHECK IF ALL ‘IS WELL ?????
COME ON THIS IS THE VERY LEAST WE CAN DO !!!!
This is why I want, hope and fully condone my cats eating me when I die. I do not want them to starve waiting to be saved.
So basicly no one cared to check on this person and their pet. I guess no neighbors to even notice Astrid wasn’t out for potty. So incredibly sad. People wake up , if you’re too “busy” to be involved at least call in a welfare check. Sad commentary on the state of the world today.
Bless that sweet pup. DOGS > people.
What a precious, precious animal! We humans can learn from them yet half the population spends time, abusing and doing horrible things to them. She will make an amazing pet for somebody. She did not bail on her owner. So glad somebody finally found her.
