Dog Falls From 4,000 Step Stairway To Heaven Trail On Oahu

A dog hiking with its owner fell from Oahu's Stairway to Heaven trail prompting a rescue by the local fire department.

Kaneohe, Hawaii – On September 4, a dog fell from the Stairway to Heaven trail on Oahu, prompting a rescue effort from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD). According to the fire department, a 911 call came in around 5:30 p.m., and five units staffed with 13 personnel responded.

According to a news release, a 55-pound dog was hiking with a female when the dog fell 50 feet off the trail. The woman was able to descend from the trail and reach her dog, who was unharmed.

Rescuers boarded Air 1 and used the woman’s cell signal to secure her approximate location. After visually locating the woman and her dog near a waterfall, a rescuer secured them with a harness and they were airlifted to a nearby landing zone.

The Stairway to Heaven trail, also known as the Haiku Stairs, is a strenuous, risky venture that is illegal (expect hefty fines if caught!). Many people take on the risk because of the rewarding views at the top.
