Denmark – A zoo in northern Denmark has reached out to the public in a quest for food for its captive predators. In a social media post, Aalborg Zoo said it would take donations of “smaller pets” in order to provide its predators with whole prey like they would hunt in the wild.
The zoo said donated pets would be “gently euthanized” before being fed to zoo animals:
“If you have an animal that has to leave here for various reasons, feel free to donate it to us. The animals are gently euthanized by trained staff and are afterwards used as fodder. That way, nothing goes to waste – and we ensure natural behavior, nutrition and well-being of our predators ♻️💕”
According to a provided link, the zoo also takes unwanted horses, who have not been sick:
Aalborg Zoo gratefully receives live horses, which we kill and slaughter for feed at Aalborg Zoo. The horse must be in a safe condition for transport and not be in treatment for illness at least within the last 30 days.
The zoo’s post has been met with a mixed reaction, ranging from people grateful that their unwanted animals could be put to “good use,” to those outraged that simply being unwanted is good enough to have them killed for the zoo’s predators.
