Lakeland, FL – A determined stray cat made a treacherous, miles long trek back to his community after being neutered. According to SPCA Florida, George the cat was still recovering from his surgery at the shelter’s veterinary clinic when he decided to make his big break.
Staff said that the anesthesia was still in George’s system when he broke out of his cage, escaped the clinic, and dashed through dense woods behind the facility.
George traveled nearly three miles back to the Loma Verde community he called home. He managed to get around a lake, cross busy streets, and dodge “countless dangers” before finding his way back to the apartment complex where residents took turns caring for him.
Before his return, the people who love George had put out food, and called for him, hoping against hope that he would miraculously find his way back – and against all odds, the brave cat, fresh from surgery and still groggy, did the seemingly impossible.

Residents tell People, “(they) woke up to a familiar sight: George, lounging on his favorite chair inside their carport, ‘looking like he had just returned from a grand adventure.'” Adding, “After a hearty meal and a good brushing, George settled down for the kind of long nap only a cat who has crossed roads, skirted lakes and dodged countless dangers can truly appreciate.”
