Suffolk, VA – A dog is lucky to be alive after someone abandoned him in a Virginia swamp. The gray pit bull was left in a crate, dumped in the swampy water that was high enough to reach his neck.
As reported by Fox 8 News, officers with the Suffolk Police Department responded to the incident on Pioneer Road. It took area residents, officers, and fire department members to lift the caged dog out of the swamp. A leash was found in the dog’s crate, and it is reported that the dog was friendly to his rescuers.
Rachel Bellis, a cruelty investigations director with PETA, tells the news agency that whoever did this could be facing animal cruelty charges. She said, “We have faith and the animal control in Suffolk that they will take this case seriously and do everything they can to bring the person or people responsible for abandoning this dog like this and really just left him to die to justice. Putting a dog in a crate, lowering them into the water and leaving them there is cruelty,” Bellis added, “The fear that this dog must have felt, and if the dog knew the person that was doing this, I mean, it’s just such a betrayal.”
After being rescued, the dog was taken to Suffolk animal control. There is an active investigation underway. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
