Ottawa County, Michigan – A man’s beloved dog bravely took on an armed stranger who broke into his home last week. The dog, a Rottweiler named Chief, suffered fatal injuries when 23-year-old Jason Varnado forced his way into a home in the 11800 block of New Holland Street, in Olive Township.
Varnado fatally stabbed Chief, who was defending his 68-year-old owner. The dog’s intervention allowed his owner to run to another room in the house and call 911. The police report reveals how Chief’s brave act saved his owner’s life:
“Chief came to the victim’s aid and engaged the suspect, allowing the victim time to retreat safely to a bedroom.”
As reported by WOOD News, Varnado is also accused of attacking his own grandmother on November 2.
Varnado was booked into the Ottawa County Jail on multiple charges, including first-degree home invasion, third-degree killing or torturing an animal and felonious assault. At his arraignment, the judge set bond at $250,000.
