Gonzales County, Texas – Days ago, officials in Gonzales County removed dozens of animals from a horse rescue and sanctuary. According to the Gonzales County Attorney’s Office, a Warrant for Seizure of Animals at Meadow Haven Horse Rescue followed an “extensive animal cruelty and neglect investigation.”
In a release, the agency said, “Upon execution of the warrant, many horses and other livestock animals were found to be in deplorable condition, and the rescue owner agreed in writing to surrender ownership of numerous horses. Unfortunately, during the veterinarians’ examination of these animals, several of them were found to be in grave condition and were suffering as a result of their condition. In such cases, at least two veterinarians independently assessed the animal and unanimously concluded that on-site euthanasia was the only humane path forward.”
Darla Cherry, who operates the rescue agency, said that the horses were not seized, they were surrendered by her after officials “threatened” to take her dogs.

Nearly 100 horses and donkeys were taken from the property and nine were euthanized on the day of the seizure. Cherry claims the horses on her property were in poor condition because she saves them from bad situation. She tells KENS5 News that her rescue operation is still in business, “They didn’t shut me down. They didn’t destroy my organization.”
Social media posts about the rescue agency are mixed, with some in support of the rescue group’s ongoing work, and others claiming outright abuse and neglect.
