Niagara County, New York – A buck who found himself stranded 10 feet down a dry well in Niagara County was rescued on November 6. According to Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife, the Niagara County Sheriff reached out for assistance in the rescue effort.
In a social media post, the organization described the challenge of removing the deer from the small hole:
“I always ask for a picture so I know I have everything I need, the picture makes the opening look so much bigger. It was actually about a 24 inch square. It had an old cover on it and unfortunately when the buck stepped on it he fell through.” Adding, “Officer Scheer took me back into the wooded area where the hole was. It was a little tricky sedating him because it was such a small opening. Once sedated the fire department was able to send someone down and put a rope around the buck.”

According to UPI, multiple agencies responded to assist, including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, police, firefighters and the Niagara County Tech Rescue Team.
The sedated buck was successfully removed from the opening and was unharmed in the process. The opening to the old well was covered to prevent other wildlife from a similar fate.
