Atlantic City, New Jersey – An Atlantic City police officer is being hailed a hero after jumping into cold bay waters to rescue a dog struggling far from shore. Officer Matt Schmidt knew a boat could not get there in time to save the dog, so he decided to take matters into his own hands – jumping into the chilly water and swimming to the dog.

In a video, Officer Schmidt says he had no choice if he wanted the dog to live. After jumping into the water, Schmidt had to swim approximately 100 yards to reach the struggling pup. Officer Schmidt secured the dog and talked to him as they made their way back towards shore.
The pair finally reached a marshy area, and the dog was handed off to animal control. The dog has a limp that is being evaluated but is said to be in otherwise good condition.
Officer Schmidt does not consider himself a hero, just a dog lover who would jump into the water again if needed. Great job officer!!
