Bangor, Maine – Maine’s first comfort dog, a three-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, died after being left in a hot car. According to sources, the young dog, Baxter, was found inside a state vehicle parked at the Bangor Regional Communications Center last Wednesday.
Baxter had worked with the Maine Bureau of Emergency Communications since 2022; his job was to provide comfort to employees at the state’s three regional dispatch centers.

In a statement, Maine’s Department of Public Safety said:
“His calming and cheerful presence will be deeply missed by all those who interacted with him. The department extends its deepest condolences to Baxter’s handler and his family, as well as the entire emergency telecommunication team.”
The temperature was in the mid-80s on the day that Baxter died. An investigation is underway to determine how and why the vehicle’s air-conditioning system stopped working.
Rest easy Baxter.

Another summer, another round of dogs and children being left in hot cars. I don’t know about other people’s cars but if I leave mine idoling the air conditioner doesn’t keep the car very cool at all. My dog doesn’t go with us if we have to go inside and leave her in the car. So many lives lost by irresponsible people!
Put that human piece of shit that left that poor poor in a hot in an equally if not hotter car.He doesn’t deserve to walk among normal people.and don’t give us that air conditioning wasn’t working bull shit.that seems to happen a lot with city or government cars.my guess is it wasn’t even on.there is a special place In hell for monsters like you.
Lot of “air conditioner failures” going on in police and government vehicles. But it’s “only” a dog, say the worst trash on the planet.
Pathetic this would happen. Shame on the handler. Don’t leave a dog in a car in that temperature even if the AC is working. This pup deserved so much better from this world. I hope those responsible are haunted by this for the remainder of their lives.
