This week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service urged social media followers to eat an “invasive pest” whose meat is described as “delicious.” The government agency posted the odd request to its Facebook page, writing:
EAT ME! Please? I’m invasive and delicious.
Adding:
Please consider the following slogan “Save a Swamp, Sauté a Nutria.”
Detailing how tasty nutria are:
Their meat has been compared to rabbit or even the dark meat of a turkey. If your state has nutria, check your local regulations to see the rules for how to hunt, capture and then ultimately, cook these nuisance critters.
Some people commenting on the social media post were put off by the agency’s request to cull and eat the animals. One person said, “I guess I just don’t like the thought of any animals having to be killed for simply existing.” Another person wrote, “Humans ruining the environment by exploiting and killing animals and solving it by….exploiting and killing animals. Tale as old as time. Maybe one day yall will figure it out.”
While others applauded the suggestion, offering up their own recipe ideas, “next time you are out duck hunting, see if you can get a nutria lol it apparently makes good gumbo!” And, “De bone and brown as you would a rabbit or a squirrel, salt, pepper, garlic, onion and whatever you like as far as seasoning goes. Simmer slow and low till tender.
Goes well with mustard greens and some homestyle mashed potatoes.”
