Campbellville, CA – A mother dog and her puppies are safe today thanks to the efforts of a heroic Butte County Sheriff’s Office’s (BCSO) Search and Rescue Team member who found them in an area ravaged by the Park fire. Trevor Skaggs was flown to the area after the dogs’ owner reported that the Rottweilers were left behind during a chaotic evacuation last Wednesday.
As reported by NBC Montana, the dogs were in their owner’s truck when it became disabled. The person left the dogs and the disabled vehicle behind, but alerted first responders to the situation with the hopes that the canine family could be saved.
On July 27, pilot Conner Smith flew Skaggs to the area.
Skaggs ran 1.5 miles to the location where the dogs were reported to have been left and he found the mother and her four puppies alive, though dehydrated. Tragically, the father of the pups did not survive.
The Butte County Fires Facebook page said, “Skaggs provided the dogs with crucial water and sustenance from his protein bar, then led them 1.5 miles back to the helicopter.
The dogs were flown to safety at the Chico Airport, where they are receiving care from the North Valley Animal Disaster Group.”

This incredible rescue is a bright spot amidst the destruction caused by the Park Fire, showcasing the bravery and compassion of Skaggs and the BCSO team.
