Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Dozens of animals, including dogs, cats, turtles and ferrets, were seized from a rental home where a teenager opened fire on police officers who were performing a welfare check at the request of the teen’s mother. As reported by WISN News, the 17-year-old’s mother contacted the police because she was concerned about her son’s emotional state, and worries that he may have been bitten by a dog.
When officers arrived at the residence near Holton and Chambers streets on the morning of September 18, the teenager fired through the door, nearly hitting the two officers on the porch.

Inside the residence, officers found 34 animals living in squalor. Neighbors expressed shock that so many animals were in the home. Neighbor Dorion Ransom tells the news agency, “I don’t see why, why somebody would have that many animals, like especially staying in an apartment like that. It’s like, how do you even have room to house all the animals like that?”

The teen was arrested and is possibly facing a charge of intentional homicide. The 34 animals were seized and taken to a facility by the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission.
