Suffolk County, New York – A couple was taken to jail after the authorities discovered a house of horrors in Suffolk County. Police arrested Samantha Boyd, 57, and her boyfriend Neal Weschler, 61, after finding over 200 neglected animals living in squalor, as well as a 95-year-old woman surrounded by piles of trash in the upstairs area of the couple’s Northport home.
A menagerie of animals, including chickens, parakeets, squirrels, dogs, cats, and more were inside the squalid home, most trapped in filthy cages. As reported by the New York Post, Samantha Boyd was licensed as a wildlife rehabilitator. On October 3, Humane Long Island wrote:
Samantha Boyd, aka Samantha Bee Kind, was anything but kind to animals.
Following a complaint by Humane Long Island, authorities removed 206 animals from the home of this rogue rehabber who was irresponsibly licensed by the Department of Environmental Conservation without routine inspections or oversight. Samantha hoarded wild and farmed animals as if they were pets in a home surrounded by trash, filth, and feces while betraying both animals and the public trust, even going as far as offering up animals online to be killed and eaten.
Boyd and Weschler are facing multiple counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty, and Boyd is also charged with endangering the welfare of a vulnerable elderly person. Boyd pleaded not guilty and is currently not in custody; Weschler is waiting to be arraigned at Suffolk County court.
