Zoo Mourns Loss Of Elderly African Lion, Kamau

Sacramento, CA – Staff at the Sacramento Zoo is mourning the loss of an elderly African lion named Kamau. According to a release from the zoo, the nearly 17-year-old lion was humanly euthanized after developing “worsening gastrointestinal problems with decreased interest in food.”

According to the zoo, Kamau was one of the “most charismatic and iconic animals” at the zoo. He arrived there in 2008 and wowed visitors with his “impressive roar.”

In 2014, Kamau sired a litter of cubs and in 2019, his habitat doubled in size and a glass viewing wall allowed our guests to get “nose-to-nose” with both Kamau and his mate, Cleo, who is said to be “doing well” following Kamau’s death.

Rest easy Kamau.
