Zoo Mourns Death Of Giraffe Who Suffered Injury From A Fall

Dallas, TX – The Dallas Zoo has announced the passing of a 15-year-old giraffe who was humanely euthanized after suffering a severe injury caused by a fall. According to the zoo, Ferrell unexpectedly fell in the barn on December 29 and dislocated and his jaw.

The zoo explains:

Our animal care and veterinary teams quickly assessed his condition and determined the injury required a surgical consult. During the procedure, the team discovered he had dislocated his jaw in such a way that surgery could not repair it.

Adding:

The nature of this injury meant that Ferrell would face limitations in the use of his jaw and tongue, likely requiring a partial or full amputation of his tongue in the future. Given this prognosis, and the impact on Ferrell’s quality of life, the team made the incredibly difficult decision to humanely euthanize Ferrell on Sunday, December 31.

Ferrell had previously injured his jaw 13 years ago and it impacted the use of his tongue. The current injury further damaged his tongue, making eating nearly impossible.

Staff is mourning the tremendous loss:

This sudden loss has left us all completely heartbroken. We kindly ask that you keep our staff in your thoughts as we navigate through this challenging time. Ferrell will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Rest in peace Ferrell.
