Zoo Announces Tragic Death Of Beloved Zebra, Stuart

Milwaukee, WI – On Thursday, the Milwaukee County Zoo announced the tragic death of a zebra named Stuart. According to zoo officials, Stuart died on May 24 while “running and chasing impalas” in their habitat.

The release states:

Stuart inadvertently came in contact with a wire containment fence pole. The wire fencing surrounds the habitat. Despite immediate response from the veterinary team, he did not survive his injuries.

According to the zoo, Stuart had been in the habitat several times this year, as has been the case for the previous 4 summer seasons.

Stuart’s death is a heartbreaking loss for the animal care team.

Rest in peace, Stuart.

  1. So sad. Sorry for your loss. Wish the fencing could be changed as a result of this tragedy. Such a beautiful still very young zebra. Glad he was enjoying running with the impalas. But so tragic. Run free, Stuart. Rest in Peace. 🙏❤️🦓🕊️🙏❤️

  2. That fence must be changed immediately of this will happen again. It is incumbent on every zoo to secure their animals in the safest way possible. Obviously, this didn’t meet that standard.

    • ZOO should be SAFE for Animals — after all, we pull them out of their natural habitats, remove them from their Families — we OWE them –

  4. Zoos are a death sentence for many animals. How tragic, the risk was clearly there but the zoo was oblivious to it. Gorgeous Zebra Stuart, run free now out of Prison where you should never had to live .

  5. First of all zoos are not where these animals belong. Secondly, the fencing is obviously not appropriate and needs changed
