World’s Oldest Dog, Bobi, Celebrates 31st Birthday

Leiria, Portugal – On May 11, the world’s oldest dog celebrated his 31st birthday. Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo, had already shattered the average life expectancy of a dog at 30 years of age and he is doing amazingly well despite his advanced age.

His owner, Leonel Costa, threw the special pooch a “very traditional” Portuguese party to celebrate Bobi’s 31 years of life. The birthday bash included more than 100 guests, who enjoyed meats and fish with the guest of honor.

Watch a video of Bobi here.

According to Guinness World Records, Bobi’s life has been rather hectic since he secured the World’s Oldest Dog title in February, and his owner was rather concerned that he was suffering some stress from all of the attention, but he said that Bobi is “better” now.

Bobi’s owners believe that his longevity is due to him living in a “calm, peaceful environment” and eating human food, rather than dog food. According to a news release from Guinness, Bobi is a social pooch who spends his days hanging out in the yard with the family’s cats, or lounging by the fire.

Bobi’s considerable age has been verified by a veterinary medical service.

His owner knows that Bobi is a special treasure, he said:

“Bobi is special because looking at him is like remembering the people who were part of our family and unfortunately are no longer here, like my father, my brother, or my grandparents who have already left this world. Bobi represents those generations.”

Happy birthday Bobi!
