Woman Charged In Case Involving Dog Starved To Death

Duluth, MN – A woman believed to be responsible for allowing a dog to starve to death has been charged with mistreatment and torture of an animal. As reported by Northern News Now, Rainna Ann Korby, 23, of Duluth, was charged this week for the death of a dog named Gio, aka Lovebug.

This week, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office – MN wrote:

The Sheriff’s Office would like to announce the arrest of a suspect involved in a severe animal neglect case, which resulted in the death of a pit pull named Gio (aka Lovebug). The dog was brought to Animal Allies, just barely clinging to life. After attempts to save its life, Gio unfortunately died. The suspect was lodged at the St. Louis County jail and will face felony charges of animal neglect.

According to reports, prior to being brought to the shelter, the dog was left in a small, filthy crate, filled with his feces and urine. It is believed that Gio was locked in the cage for a month, without food.

Korby came up with a cover story to dump the ailing, starved dog at a shelter. Gio was brought to the Animal Allies facility on November 11 by a woman who claimed to be a DoorDash driver who found him in a ditch. The woman was actually someone who had been staying off and on with Korby; she had been asked by Korby to drop the starved dog off at the shelter.

The shelter quickly determined that Gio belonged to Korby, who admitted that the dog had been with her since he was six months old.

Korby said she became overwhelmed and moved out of her home about a month ago. She assumed the woman who stayed off and on with her would take care of Gio, but admitted that she had not actually asked her to. When Gio became frail and near death, Korby wanted him dropped at a shelter so she would not have to see him in his skeletal condition.

Gio died not long after being dropped at the shelter. Five days ago, Animal Allies said:

Lovebug had such a fighting spirit and was showing so many signs of progress – but sometimes all the body needs is warmth and love in order to pass with dignity. We are so thankful he was provided with supportive medical care and did not have to end his journey in pain or alone. However, we are so sorry for the sadness we know everyone is feeling right now. We are feeling it too.

Korby is due in court on December 12; she faces up to two years in prison.
