Kasilof, AK – Two Kasilof residents are facing animal cruelty charges following the discovery of a dead dog who was chained to a tree in subzero temperatures. According to the Daily Dispatch, Alaska State Troopers took a report of abandoned dogs on property in Kasilof. The report came from someone who believed the residents moved away, leaving dogs behind when the temperature was “consistently” at 15 degrees below zero .
Troopers found a vacant home and a dead dog outside in a doghouse – the dog was tethered to a tree. The authorities were aided in their investigation by a veterinary hospital which helped determine the dog’s manner of death:
Twin Cities Veterinary Clinic for their help in the investigation. They were able to provide insight into the emaciated and neglected nature of the deceased dog. The dog was a younger male who would have likely been otherwise healthy. AST later learned the dog’s name was Lee.
As reported by Alaska Public Media, Heather Harris, 36, and Harley Potter, 42, each face two felony counts of cruelty to animals for the cruel incident. The individuals could face penalties up to $50,000 for each animal cruelty count and five years in prison.
