Time Is Up For Gorgeous Shepherd Pup At Crowded Shelter

Update 5/15/2023: A wonderful update about beautiful Lonzo! He has been rescued by Stacy Hope Rescue. The agency wrote, “Guess who’s out of the stinky building😭😍 our beautiful boy Lonzo!!🥳🥳 We wanted to save a #gsd for the #nationalgermanshepherdday and we could do it ONLY with your help🙌🏼 thanks everyone who shared him with us❤️”

Downey, CA – A very good boy named Lonzo is facing the end of his life, through no fault of his own. The year-old shepherd is still just a pup, and a handsome pup at that, but for some reason, he has been overlooked at the Downey Animal Shelter.

And Lonzo is out of time. He is one of the many “urgent” dogs who must be adopted or rescued soon, or he will be led to a back room and unceremoniously euthanized – gone forever, and quickly forgotten.

A shelter volunteer said:

He’s such a doll. He’s greeted me with bright hellos and sometimes worried looks, but he always said hello. He’s so precious.

Lonzo is a frightened pup who desperately wants to live, and be loved. That won’t happen if he is not adopted or rescued soon.

Please share Lonzo’s adoption information. Your “share” might be the one that saves his life.

Find Lonzo’s adoption profile here.

  1. Unbelievable I would take him if I do not have 2 dogs already.we need to past laws no more puppies. Putting a dog to s because of worthless people. Bless you doggie and all the dogs that get put to sleep everyday. Vote people in office that will do something about this.

    • I live in SoCal and am very familiar with the shelters here. They are a disgrace. Killing healthy dogs for space. No background checks for adopters. You can barely get hold of anyone so most of the dogs in the shelters here now are on death row. I wrote to the Executive Director who said they can email us. That is an insufficient response. Dogs are dying while rescues are waiting to hear from the shelters. Something needs to be done about it right away.

      • It’s sickening to hear this!! I’m sure it’s horrible and weighs heavily on the workers who have to kill healthy dogs and cats!! I presume your shelters are not government subsidized! Here is who I blame!! The municipality’s who don’t provide funds and those who don’t spay and neuter and let their dogs run at large! Shame on them for causing the killing of perfectly good dogs! Puppy mill owners should be jailed for life when caught and what about the breeding in dog fighting rings? Every concerned person should be out there firming groups to insist all shelters be subsidized!

  2. Killing in NEVER the answer! Is this a shelter, a safe place, or a slaughterhouse?! Please reach out to true NO KILL shelters, mostly in the Northeast, and let this innocent dog live his life!

  3. I really am disturbed by these posts, and this is among them, that use these awful scare tactics. This gorgeous, healthy dog may be euthanized. Couldn’t he and other dogs in this position be publicized before the threat is imminent? Seeing this on a Friday morning gives little time for a person or rescue to help. The ones publicizing the plight of these dogs should be reaching out to get them help. Then right below is an advertisement for selling puppies. It’s the overbreeding and over abundance of dogs and cats that is the problem created by irresponsible snd greedy humans. But animals suffer.

    • Sadly there are hundreds of unwanted pets at this one shelter – there are hundreds at most EVERY shelter. This dog has been waiting since March – but nobody does much until they get word that euthanasia is likely. Networking helps – if you are away from the area where the dog is located, it’s the best you can do.

    • You are so right. NEVER BUY FROM BREEDERS OR PET STORES! There are wonderful pets waiting for you to come get them and at a much lower cost.

  5. This dog has been at this Shelter since ‘March’ – only ‘MARCH’ it is just May – what does this Shelter expect when they make no ‘efforts’ to advertise these animals and get the public’s attention – run a ‘public adoption’ at a Pet Store or in a Parking Lot or SOMEWHERE – this Shelter seems like the place where ‘animals come to wait to DIE.’ I live in Ohio and our nearby Shelter runs ‘massive adoption’ projects successfully – so successfully so that it takes in animals from other states – take a page – don’t be lazy about this – or complacent – animals lives are at stake – PUT THIS DOG ON ‘PAWBOOST’ or ‘Adopt-a-‘ – or send him to a ‘NO KILL SHELTER’ that takes ‘action’ – DO SOMETHING OTHER THAN JUST ‘WAIT’ – since when is there success ‘EVERY’ in WAITING FOR ANYTHING IN LIFE

  6. WHAT ABOUT THREATENING THIS DOWNEY SHELTER WITH A NATIONAL NEWS SPREAD REGARDING THEIR TREATMENT OF THESE ANIMALS?
MAYBE THAT WILL CURE THE PROBLEM INSTANTLY!!!
ENOUGH PEOPLE SEE A SPOTLIGHT ON THIS SHELTER, THEY WILL BE FORCED TO ATTEND TO THE ISSUE…;)
    LAYNA – VANCOUVER, CANADA.
I WOULD TAKE HIM, BUT, I CAN’T RIGHT NOW, AS I AM IN AN APARTMENT.
HE’S HAVE TO BE FLOWN TO ME & I’D HAVE TO BE IN MY NEW PLACE & I AM NOT THERE YET. DON’T KNOW WHEN THAT WILL BE EXACTLY.
SOMEBODY HAS TO HELP LONZO!…F.C.O.L. HE’S JUST A PUPPY!

  7. I would love to take this wonder boy but I live in Canada & can’t afford to bring him here. It’s a shame they chose to murder these poor babies. They really need to do more for them

  8. Sadly this is happening at EVERY so-called municipal shelter. They are all out of room and there are way more people turning in animals than adopting. Heartbreaking situation….worse that those of us in rescue have ever seen!
