Phoenix, AZ – Earlier this month, the Arizona Humane Society accepted a “colorful” dog and her puppies. The animal welfare agency said that the dog and her puppies had been tethered on a short leash in the scorching sun with no water.
The agency said:
Meet Rainbow Brite, a 5-year-old Pitbull mix with leopard spots! She may have a playful appearance, but her rescue story is serious. This sweet pup was tethered on a short leash outside with her 9 pups in the scorching sun with no water. Thankfully, the whole family is safe now, but her story is just one example of hundreds we will see this summer as the extreme heat impacts our community’s most vulnerable pets.

Rainbow Brite and Her 9 Sprites are looking for a Foster Hero! Be a part of a brighter future for this adorable family by signing up at azhumane.org/foster.
Dogs are highly vulnerable to heat because they don’t sweat like humans — they can only regulate their body temperature through panting and limited sweating through their paw pads. When left in hot environments, such as cars or unshaded yards, they can quickly overheat, leading to heatstroke, organ failure, or death. It’s critical to keep dogs cool and hydrated during warm weather to protect their health and save their lives.
This family is safe, but if you see a dog suffering in the heat, please call your local animal control officials to make a report – you may save a life.
