Shelter Pens Letter To Homeless Person Who Abandoned Their Dog With A Sad Note

Atlanta, GA – On Friday, an Atlanta animal shelter shared an open letter to the homeless person who abandoned their dog, Milo, with a sad note. The letter from the Lifeline Animal Project was not scathing or judgemental; instead, it was compassionate.

The animal welfare agency begins:

We found your dog right where you left him in a space where he wouldn’t get hit by a car or harmed when wandering freely in search of sanctuary.

Our shelter team found him as they came into the shelter for the morning shift and brought him into the building while he waited for his turn for his intake exam.

Explaining that Milo joined the “hundreds of other dogs” at the facility, and their thoughts about the touching note that was left:

Reading the opening lines, we thought of how it must have felt for you to write that message as you left your loved one behind. What a brave act of self-sacrifice to risk scorn and judgment while trying to do what was best for Milo, to make sure that he would be safe, would be able to get veterinary care, and would have food, water, and a roof over his head.

Because of the note that was left, shelter staff not only knew the dog’s name, but they were made aware of his likes, age, and a bit about his veterinary history.

The shelter expressed their love for Milo, and their desire to help reunite him with the person who obviously loved him:

We love him, too, and will do everything in our power to help him go home. If you are reading this and there’s any chance that we can help reunite you with Milo and support both of you, please reach out to our team at pethelp@fultonanimalservices.com. You will be met with compassion and understanding. Milo deserves the safety and security of a home, and so do you.

I’m sure these people would help you and Milo.. you may consider at least discussing the situation with them as they, as a rescue organization, definitely has contacts and help that you may not be aware they have their can help you. God bless you. God bless Milo. God bless humanity reaching back out to you to reward you compassion for Milo and offer the possibility of creating a situation where reuniting you both would be a loving life experience.

  4. Can’t return the dog to the owner – the note says he may have mange which is another thing the shelter will have to fix before he’s available for adoption. And obviously the owner couldn’t afford to fix. The owner clearly says she cannot take care of herself let alone the dog. If she is homeless, where will she get the money to feed him, take him to the vet if he needs medical treatment, etc. I don’t judge the person for trying to do the right thing for their dog, but they could have brought him in during the shelter’s open hours instead of leaving him somewhere alone. What if someone evil found him and hurt him? What if he ran off only to roam the streets without food and water or care and suffered? Owner and dog should not be reunited unless the person somehow gets off the streets and into a apt that accepts dogs.

  5. Milo’s owner knew they couldn’t take proper care of him. At least they had the good sense to drop him off at a shelter.
