Senior Dog, Dropped Off With Bed, Toys, Sweaters, And Framed Portrait, Has Been Rescued From Shelter

Midlothian, VA – A senior dog is embarking on her new life after a Virginia-based animal rescue agency saved her from an area shelter. According to Sanctuary Rescue, the 12-year-old beagle, Abby, was surrendered to a nearby animal shelter with her belongings…right down to her sweaters and a framed portrait. The agency said:

Today we rescued a sweet, 12-year-old gal that was dropped off at the shelter with her bed, her toys, 12 years of vet records, two bags of her sweaters, and her framed portrait. We’re thinking of hanging the dog’s portrait in our office to remind us to be humble, to give grace, to spend energy on loving instead of judging, and to always help where and when we can because you just never know what the future holds and what curveballs life might throw at you.

According to Sanctuary Rescue, the shelter said that Abby’s former family had to surrender their companion because of some “major life changes” that prevented them from keeping their pets.

Abby has been taken in by one of the shelter’s foster families, and she is making herself right at home. On March 5, the organization posted images of Abby, writing:

Foster mom assured us that Abby, the senior beagle, has made herself right at home. She busied herself yesterday by trying out every single dog bed in the home. She thinks she’s Goldilocks.

  2. Abandoning loved ones because of life changes? Hmmm. Sounds like some relative(s) of the dog’s helpless loved one did this. People who were obligated to take in their sick relative, but couldn’t be bothered by the pets? I wonder. What a beautiful old girl Abby is, may she get a perfect and secure life.

    • Or the owner died without family or had to be taken to a facility. I have ended up with a few dogs at our place that way.

  3. Sweet dog. Someone is going to be blessed to get her. More if this will be happening. Deaths are going to increase from the deadly jabs. 🙏❤️🐶

  4. There is no excuse for this. I don’t care what it is there is no reason to abandoning a 12 year old furbaby or any baby. I have slept in my car in order to keep my babies. I am so glad Abby is safe and loved now

    • Sometimes people pass with no family or become sick and must go to a facility. Don’t be quite so harsh. Sweaters and portraits – obviously she was loved.

  5. Stupid ‘owners.’ Why didn’t they just bring the little beagle girl into the shelter themselves. Abandoning a dog is a crime I believe…so glad she got a new home….love beagles.

    • It didn’t sound like she was “abandoned”. She was brought to the shelter with 12 years of vet records, framed drawing, bags of sweaters and blankets. So she obviously had a lifetime of love. She certainly looks well cared for. Sometimes people with no family die, leaving pets behind. Sometimes there is a catastrophic illness where someone needs to be put in a facility. Necessary age related moves to a facility are Sometimes required.
At my place I have ended up with pets whose people are devastated but have literally no other choice.
You love Beagles? Please support beagle rescue or a rescue that specializes in senior pets. Give to your local shelter (ASPCA, Humane Society of US and Peta spend to much in my opinion on advertising, fundraising and lobbyists ).
Death and Life happen – don’t be so harsh to judge. It looks like this Begle was loved.

  6. It’s horrible what happened to Abby and the other pets
We don’t know the whole story it can be anything from uncaring owners, to losing their home, owner died and family didn’t want pets, owner put in nursing home that doesn’t allow pets.
But thankfully Abby and I hope the other pets were all rescued and not left behind and hopefully not in a high kill shelter.

I can say enough times people no matter how old you are and your health make plans for your pets incase anything happens to you. In these plans have follow up care and over sight. Having a non profit make unannounced inspection to make sure your pets are cared for. Mandatory vet visits to make sure they are health or any illness is cared for.
Set up a fund to pay new owners money and money to the non profit to do regular check ups
Don’t trust anyone with your pet
One horror story a woman left her house to her nephew so he’d take care of her cat
No sooner he moved in he dumped the cat on the street and it didn’t last very long on the street. She trusted her nephew to keep his promise and had no follow up inspection to guarantee he kept his word and no recourse – like taking the house back giving it another person

PLEASE MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR PETS

  7. Sounds like this was an act of desperation-the dog was obviously loved by the previous owners given the belongings and memories that were left with the dog . They obviously wanted her taken care of. Something drastic happened here that forced them to do this and I think that (a) some compassion should be shown the owners and (b) the animal rescue stepped up to give her a chance at a new life and that is the most important thing here and I am sure that is what would give the previous owners some semblance of comfort.
