Westerly, Rhode Island – A dog who fell through an ice-covered pond skirted almost certain death thanks to rescuers with local fire departments. According to the Misquamicut Fire Department, the dog, named Phoenix, was on a morning walk with his owner when he ventured onto the ice of Little Masachaug Pond.
The ice was thin and Phoenix fell into the frigid water. Assistance was requested from the Watch Hill Fire Department, and a rescue team quickly went to work to save the golden retriever’s life.
In a social media post, the Misquamicut Fire Department recounted the situation:
Volunteers were on scene within minutes and located Phoenix, a golden retriever, struggling in the water and unable to move with his owner safely on shore.
Members from both fire departments quickly donned ice rescue suits and entered the pond, making a swift and successful rescue, while additional personnel prepared equipment, including an inflatable rescue boat. Phoenix and the rescuers were safely brought back to shore and were all doing well when on scene.
The rescuers, and Phoenix, were evaluated after the frigid ordeal and all were found to be in good condition. The department issued a warning about the dangers of cold water and ice rescues writing:
Reminder: No ice is ever safe. Our firefighters train extensively for cold water and ice rescues, but these situations are extremely dangerous.
