Eugene, Oregon – An orphaned bear cub, seemingly looking for help, was euthanized by wildlife officials who feared he might have rabies. According to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), the results of the testing came back negative for the deadly virus.
As reported by KVAL News, the bear cub wandered into a neighborhood on July 16 and began approaching humans.
The residents attempted to lure the cub away from homes with some fruit, but after some time passed, the cub returned to the road.
Eventually ODFW officials arrived and captured the cub. A department spokesperson said the cub was drooling in the crate and was “unresponsive.” Because of the unusual behavior, and fearing rabies, the cub was euthanized for testing.
Officials believe that euthanasia was the most humane option given the cub’s condition. ODFW Public Affairs Specialist Meghan Dugan said, “Two to three times a year we get these young bears that just cannot fend for themselves, and you know, they get weak, they get emaciated, and they die.”

Did it ever occur to the Wildlife officials that the bear could possibly have been drooling because he was really hot and really hungry? TOTALLY unacceptable and horrible and now this poor little hungry cub is DEAD, and that’s forever. POLICIES MUST CHANGE IMMEDIATELY, especially as human/wildlife encounters will be increasing because we keep encroaching upon their territory, we have changed the climate so that they must adjust migration routes and find new sources of food.

It’s not the cubs fault that he couldn’t fend for himself since he didn’t have a mom to teach him & that people are encroaching on the wildlife homes since stupid humans are destroying there homes by building homes on there territory so we need to learn how to coexist?!!! Killing of all animals needs to stop?!!! This is so wrong. The poor little bear didn’t know not to approach humans. So cruel. They could have quarantined the bear and then send it to a wildlife sanctuary. So sad. Animal Control playing God. Awful!

Why is it always that the people that are being paid to protect and help animals are so ready to euthanize for any reason? The poor, innocent animals always seem to pay the price no matter what. Animals come looking to us for help and instead of actually helping them; this is what happens. That is wrong in so many ways!
Wildlife conservation officers are supposed to protect life not euthanize it. It was a damn baby for God sake coming to ask for help because it didn’t have any other options. This was disgusting. He could have been quarantined. That is what I did with my cats after being told by a Sheriff’s deputy to have my cats tested since it was too much effort to come and test the bat that got on their catio.

Cowards! This baby bear was young enough to be brought to sanctuary if return to the wild was not an option. Humans most likely are the reason he was not with his mother and humans are the reason why he’s been killed. If those in charge hadn’t panicked and assumed rabies, he’d be alive today. Shame on you all.
