Miracle Dog Survives Shooting That Killed Owner

Richmond, VA – A German shepherd named Luca is defying the odds stacked against him after being found inside a home with his deceased owner, who was shot over the weekend. According to Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC), the dog suffered gunshot wounds and was not found for 20 hours after the shooting that killed his owner and another person.

On Monday, the animal welfare agency said:

“Please help us save this sweet dog. ❤️ Luca and his owner were shot in their home and not discovered for more than 20 hours. Sadly, his owner died. 💔😭💔 It’s a miracle that Luca survived; we need another miracle to save him.”

An exam revealed bullet fragments near his head and neck and his condition was listed as “guarded.” A subsequent post by RACC provides a promising update on Luca’s condition:

“All of your prayers and well wishes must be working! Luca is up and can use all four legs! 🎉 We know it’s not very pretty yet, but this is a big step forward. He’s much brighter and is wagging his tail when anyone approaches his kennel. ❤️ Luca visited Bush Veterinary Neurology Service today and our plan is to give him time to see how much he improves with supportive hospitalization.”

Luca will not undergo surgery to remove the bullet fragments unless he begins to decline. You can follow Luca’s progress at this link to RACC on Facebook.

As reported by Your Erie News, the police are not looking for any suspects in the shooting.
