Doncaster, United Kingdom – On Saturday, a tragedy unfolded before horrified visitors at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park when a man jumped into a tiger enclosure. According to reports, the man confronted Altai, the tiger, before being mauled by the big cat.
On the day of the incident, the South Yorkshire Police said the man died:
At 1.35pm today (Saturday 10 October) we received reports of a man entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury. Emergency services attended and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to reports, a woman had tried to stop the man from entering the enclosure, but the man overpowered her. As of Monday, October 12, the man’s identity had not been released, but his family was made aware of what happened.
The wildlife park has assured concerned individuals that Altai was not harmed during the incident, and he will not be euthanized because of what happened.

Some accounts of this incident have suggested that the man was autistic because he was using some sort of autism sign language. If this was true then where were his caregivers? He should not have been on his own. It is sad he was killed but not unexpected. Tigers are apex predators and if they detect a stranger in their territory, it is no surprise or accident that they will respond with lethal force.
