Salem, New Jersey – A sergeant with the Salem County Sheriff’s Office is facing criminal charges after two K9s died of heat stroke after being left in a parked vehicle for seven hours. On Wednesday, the Salem County Sheriff’s Office stated:
The Salem County Sheriff’s Office remains deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our K-9 partners, Rip and Boomer. These exceptional canines dedicated their lives to serving and protecting the residents of Salem County and were valued members of our law enforcement family.
The Office has been notified that following an investigation conducted by the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office, K-9 Sergeant Cody Henderson has been formally charged in connection with the deaths of his assigned canine partners K-9 Officer Boomer and K-9 Officer Rip.
An investigation revealed the dogs were left in Cody Henderson’s patrol vehicle between the hours of 8:30 a.m. until about 3:30 p.m. The windows of the vehicle were rolled up and the car was off. Because the vehicle was off, the installed emergency alert system was not functioning.
According to prosecutors, there were indoor kennels available at the courthouse where Sergeant Henderson was attending.
Cody Henderson is facing multiple charges including two third-degree counts of purposefully, knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury to a living animal by failing to provide necessary care, resulting in death, and two counts each of inflicting unnecessary cruelty upon a living animal by leaving the animals unattended inside a vehicle under inhumane conditions; failing to provide necessary care to animals while responsible for their well-being; and unlawfully restraining a dog in a manner that exposed the animals to adverse environmental conditions for more than 30 minutes.

As someone who worked in Iaw enforcement, and have done suppIementaI research for a Iong time, I have been trying to get peopIe to WAKE UP about this. But most stay fast asleep, believing in the media-generated “one bad appIe” cIub,
The bottom Iine is that the crueIty in “training” and keeping of K9’s is TAUGHT AND REQUIRED in the miIitary and paramiIitary. Therefore, it attracts the most egotisticaI and sadistic individuaIs. Every once in a bIue moon, a somewhat humane individual may find himself on the “team,” and may treat his own dog better on his off duty time, but the requirements are for treatment (and weekIy meet for “training”) that crosses into torture. The dogs are aIso required to be kept in isolation when not in use or being overtIy abused.
In pubIic the dogs are caIIed “partners.” In private, where the pubIic can’t hear, they are referred to as “tooIs” or “equipment,” Far more k9s are kiIIed by their handIers and Iead “trainers” than by any suspects of enemies.
The Iying, coverups, and propaganda invoIved to make you beIieve it is “one bad appIe” when a Ieak occurs, is OFF THE CHARTS.
The departments and the handIers DO NOT PAY for the dogs, or for their “training.” This ADDS to their cavalier attitude toward the suffering and deaths.
So, Ieaving the dogs in cars to die by heat prostration is no skin off their teeth. They protect each other, and that protection extends aII the way up through the department, the D.A.’s office, and even to the state Attorney GeneraI. That’s why they’re so arrogantIy smug about continuing to do these things. And currentIy, they can make one guy the scapegoat if a whistIebIower with evidence comes foreward, and the rest of them simpIy continue to do as they pIease.
I have amassed a huge Iibraey of information, and aII I can say, again, is:
WAKE UP ! ! ! !
I am glad the department is taking this seriously and charging the one responsible for this reprehensible behavior. I am a huge supporter of police, fire, rescue, etc….but unfortunately there are good and bad people in ALL walks of life and employment. I hope that whatever is decided this particular officer is never allowed to work with canines again as he obviously either didn’t value them to begin with or for some reason stopped valuing them. We’ll probably never know. Both these courageous, beautiful animals did not deserve such a horrible death after having no choice themselves to serve. Rest in peace, beautiful boys!!
That stupid POS should go to prison but first lock him in a hot car for a couple hours and see how he likes it!!!
The department is doing damage controI.
It is typicaI for departments in this situation to act as though they’re doing something about it untiI the heat dies down – then its business as usuaI – unIess it blows up to a reaI big story, and then the department might have to sacrifice the offending officer to their “one bad appIe” routine in order to not have the spotIight on the department and the other dog torturing criminaIs, pIus other complicit department members, incIuding the chief.
I agree. After several hours, taxpayers won’t need to waste money for prison because he will hopefully be dead.
This POS better get the same treatment as any other person who leaves their dog in the car to die. Just because he is a cop dont sweep it under the rug, the country is watching…. RIP sweet babies, I’m sorry you suffered because of subhuman slime.
Those dogs put their lives on the line each day without choice just to serve humans. They deserved to be adored and appreciated. The creep is responsible deserves to experience the worst that life can thrown at him. It just confirms how void of common sense and compassion those in uniforms can often be. It’s very opposite of “protect and serve”.
Pitiful example of a canine officer and a man. These dogs were his partners and this is how he treated them!
Let him spend his day in a hot car ALL DAY! Stupid beyond belief! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I absolutely do not understand how this can happen! How does an officer of the law, a sergeant no less, “forget” he has 2 animals sitting in the car that might as well be called a tomb?! Thank you for charging him with criminal cruelty and neglect. He needs to pay for his crimes. There is no other way to send a message that this will not be tolerated any longer. The suffering they endured is horrific
Total idiot, he knew better. He should lose his job and never be able to have animals. The fact that he would do something as stupid as that he doesn’t deserve the love of an animal. Fire his stupid ass and put him on the animal abuse list!!
And again, a person of authority and trust has shown you cannot trust people in authority. Not only do police shoot and kill people’s pets, but they also kill their own police dogs. What a heinous and callous act of cruelty.
Do the same to him. Ten hours in Phoenix in July should do it.
I just find it difficult to believe Cody Henderson, who somehow has reached the rank of sergeant, did not know it was not okay to leave a dog(s) in a car with no a/c or even open windows in the summer. So, that would mean it was intentional. Surely no one would sit in a courthouse for 7 hours and not realize they have left dogs, for whom they are responsible, in the hot car.
This is like children being left in a hot car. Sometimes even good, well meaning parents do it. For both children and dogs, it needs to be studied how this happens and how to prevent it.
Make this dumb ass sit in a hot car for 7 hours! See if he survives!! Those poor dogs suffered terribly while he sat in the air conditioned court house!
He must be brain dead to do such a heinous thing to those dogs
You effen IDIOT!!! You should be left in a hot car for 30 min and pulled out at the last second!!!!!
I just cant wrap my head around how this could happen. Especially a canine sargent who presumably has these 2 dogs at his side every day. Unless it was intentional.
