Heartbroken Zoo Announces Death Of Beloved Red Panda

Akron, OH – On Monday morning, the Akron Zoo made a heartbreaking announcement about the death of their beloved red Panda, Penny. According to a release from the zoo, Penny was humanely euthanized following a “brief illness.”

The zoo said:

Despite extensive treatments and supportive care, Penny’s health and quality of life continued to decline and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her.

Penny, born at the Kansas City Zoo in 2019, died far before the anticipated life span of 15 years for a captive red panda. Doug Piekarz, president & CEO at the Akron Zoo, said:

“The Akron Zoo family is feeling Penny’s loss. Through Panda Palace, Penny was able to connect with many people and educate on this endangered species and panda conservation. Guests visited the zoo specifically to see Penny and her sisters, making her an incredible celebrity ambassador for the zoo and her species. She will be deeply missed.”

Penny’s sister, Lulu lives at the Akron Zoo, her other sister, Coco, is at the Philadelphia Zoo.

Rest in peace Penny.
