Giraffe Dies Unexpectedly At Seneca Park Zoo

Rochester, NY – The Seneca Park Zoo is mourning the loss of a giraffe calf who died unexpectedly on Saturday. Parker Jr., aka PJ, born in December 2023, passed away after what was believed to be a seizure.

A necropsy on the calf revealed that he died from encephalitis, which is infection and inflammation of the brain.

Seneca Park Zoo Veterinarian Dr. Chris McKinney commented on the calf’s death, “These animals are close companions. The keepers especially are with them every day, so everyone here has been hard hit by that.”

“Our Animal Care, Animal Health, and veterinary staff were heroic in their efforts
to save PJ,” said Seneca Park Zoo Superintendent Steve Lacy. “Teams worked
around the clock to provide an exemplary level of care. We ask the public to
please keep them in your thoughts during this difficult time.

PJ’s mom, Kipenzi, was diagnosed with a cancerous growth on her jaw in August. For the time being, she is doing well.

Rest in peace PJ. You will be missed.
