Giraffe Building Closed To Allow Zookeepers To Grieve Death Of Reticulated Giraffe, Rahna

Milwaukee County, WI – On March 29, a reticulated giraffe named Rahna was humanely euthanized at the Milwaukee County Zoo after she began experiencing age-related health issues. According to a release from the zoo, the 30-year-old giraffe has been described as being a “smart and observant giraffe” who was friendly with staff, and at times, “stubborn and opinionated.”

Rahna was born in 1992 at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs; she arrived at the Milwaukee County Zoo in 1994.

Rahna gave birth to one calf, a female named Skye, who is now 25 years of age. Skye lives at the Sacramento Zoo in California. According to the zoo’s release, Rahna did not “take well” to motherhood and her offspring was hand raised by zookeepers.

The Giraffe Building was closed on March 29 to give space for the team to grieve.
If you care to, you can honor Rahna by supporting Giraffe Conservation Foundation

Rest in peace Rahna.
