Family Reunited With 150-Pound Tortoise Who ‘Ran Away’ For A Month

San Diego, CA – A pet tortoise who “ran away” from his home of 20 years was rescued this month by staff with Cal Fire San Diego. The fire department shared a video of the 150-pound tortoise, Mr. T, explaining how he was found:

We’re shell-shocked! 🐢 A family who was missing their pet, ‘Mr. T’, for approximately one month, was ecstatic when staff from #CALFIRE San Diego found him while completing fuel reduction work near Hollenbeck Canyon Wildlife Area.

The big guy was carried by Fuels Crew Equipment Operator Cameron Will to Dozer Tender 3344 and Heavy Fire Equipment Operator Gary Will, who drove him to the firehouse. Staff found the flyers his family had put up and a reunion was arranged.

The fire department commented on what is likely the slowest escape ever, writing:

Mr. T’s owners were thrilled to see him again as they have owned him for about 20 years, since the size of a hand. We are so grateful for the opportunity to reunite him with his family after his slow paced adventure!
