Riverside County, CA -On Friday afternoon, sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a man who killed a K9 with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. On April 14, the sheriff’s office announced the death of K9 Rudy:
With great sorrow and a heavy heart, we announce the passing of K-9 Rudy. Rudy succumbed to injuries tonight sustained during the search for a wanted suspect.
As reported by ABC 7 News, Rudy was deployed after residents in Perris reported the presence of two people on their property on River Road. Deputies identified one of the people as a wanted felon and they set up a perimeter to search for the man.
Rudy alerted deputies to the area where the man was hiding, but the man fired at the K9, inflicting severe injuries that claimed the dog’s life. As deputies approached the suspect, he pointed a gun at them and they opened fire, killing him.
According to the sheriff’s office, last month K9 Rudy and his handler earned top honors at a competition in Las Vegas:
Just last month, Rudy and his handler Deputy Day received 1st place honors at the Las Vegas Metro Police K-9 Trials in the Handler Protection Category.
