Wicomico County, Maryland – An animal cruelty investigation in Wicomico County led to the discovery of hundreds of neglected cats living at a suspected cat sanctuary in Delmar. The authorities executed a search warrant on the morning of February 25 and found dead, neglected, emaciated and sickly cats in “hazardous and unsanitary sheds.”
On the day of the warrant execution, it was snowy and officials found numerous cats huddled together in an attempt to stay warm in the freezing temperatures.
Multiple agencies, including Humane World for Animals, took part in the rescue efforts and surviving cats were secured and taken to “a safe, undisclosed location” to receiving ongoing treatment and care. Stacey Volodin, Humane World’s Maryland State Director thanked the agencies who helped in the rescue efforts:
“Today’s rescue of over 100 cats in Maryland is what’s possible when partners across agencies work swiftly and in unison. I’d like to thank the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the Maryland Department of Agriculture and all the agencies involved in ensuring this seizure could move forward safely, effectively and with the animals’ well-being at the center of every decision.”
It is unclear if anyone has been arrested or charged.
