Junction City, Kansas – On Monday, July 6, the Junction City Police announced the death of a K9 Service Dog who died in the line of service on July 6. According to the agency’s July 7 press release, K9 Vethos, a Belgian Malinois, died from heat exposure in a patrol car.
K9 PSD Vethos was found unresponsive in a K9-equipped patrol vehicle.
Preliminary findings indicate the cause of death was heat exposure.
The police department requested an independent third-party investigation from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The department said, “In accordance with departmental policy, JCPD placed K9 PSD Vethos’ handler on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Vethos joined the department in 2024 and served in the Investigations Division. His loss continues to be felt deeply across JCPD and the City.

THERE IS ZERO EXCUSE FOR THIS! Police MUST BE TRAINED and HELD FULLY ACCOUNTABLE for their dogs. You hurt your dog, you will pay the price. Also, if you shoot dogs at peoples’ homes instead of using non-lethal means, you will pay the price.
It keeps happening, and that’s not aIi that happens to these dogs.

K9s are not paid for by handIers or departments. In the miIitary, taxpayers are financially invoIved.

More of these dogs die from injuries infIicted on them by their handIers and “trainers” than by any suspects or enemies, but this inconvenient fact, Iike so many others, is covered up and Iied about. It is a very complex and carefuIIy protected con game, and the dogs are victims,
In pubIic the handIers and “trainers” caII the dogs “partners”. and “feIIow officers,” and when k9s are kiIIed by suspects, departments wiII often hoId big dramatic PubIic ReIations oriented funerals for them.
In private, the handIers and “trainers” caII the dogs “tooIs” and “equipment,” perhaps to maintain emotional distance whiIe they are hanging them sIowIy to unconsciousness , suffocating them., sometimes over and over again.. When they die from the abuse, or are shot for attacking their handIers, it gets swept under the rug. No funerals for them. It’s not good press.
And, there is so much more.. Ban aII K9 units, and prosecute for crueIty.
Whole lot of rotten apples in that barrel, and we’re constantly told it’s only one on rare occasions. When will people wake up to the evil inherent in using dogs like this?
