Beloved Ostrich, Karen, Dies After Eating Staff Keys

Topeka, KS – A beloved ostrich named Karen has died from complications stemming from her ingestion of a foreign object. According to the Topeka Zoo, Karen reached beyond her enclosure’s fence and grabbed a staff member’s keys.

In a public release, the zoo said:

She immediately swallowed the keys. Zoo staff consulted with experts across the country to undergo surgical and non-surgical efforts to minimize the impact of the keys.

Tragically, the veterinary efforts were not enough to save Karen’s life.

“We are devastated by the loss of Karen,” expressed Fawn Moser, Interim Director of the Topeka Zoo. “She was not just an animal; she was a beloved member of our community. Our thoughts are with our dedicated animal care team, who formed deep bonds with Karen during her time with us.”

The zoo initiated an investigation and is taking steps to ensure that this devastating situation will not happen again. They said:

In light of this tragic event, the Topeka Zoo conducted a thorough investigation and is taking appropriate actions regarding the team member involved. Additionally, the zoo will be reviewing and enhancing its protocols to further strengthen the safety measures in place for all its residents.

Rest in peace Karen.

  1. Someone on staff was very careless – any bird is inquisitive and if close enough to an object it wants, it will grab it FAST. This was sad and preventable.
