Aurora, Horse Who Led Queen’s Procession, Has Died

Aurora, a retired Thames Valley Police horse, has passed away at the age of 13. The stately grey shire horse with a gentle demeanor led the Queen’s funeral procession into the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Aurora, also known as Doris, retired in 2022 and went to The Horse Trust. The organization said that she was struggling with lameness prior to her retirement and despite being closely monitored, the lameness progressed.

The Horse Trust explains the reason for her untimely death:

Whilst she was closely monitored by our veterinary surgeon and received check-ups regularly for these ongoing conditions, Aurora then sustained a ruptured ligament. Due to her other diagnoses and sheer size, standing at 18hh, this severely limited her prognosis and any treatment options available would have severely impacted her quality of life to undertake.

The organization made the difficult decision to free Aurora from her pain.

Rest easy Aurora.
