Lady Lake, Florida – A Florida woman was arrested shortly after Lady Lake police officers rescued her puppy from a hot vehicle. According to the authorities, the black puppy had been left in the vehicle, which was parked at a shopping center on U.S. Highway 27/441, for “at least” 40 minutes.
In a release, the police recounted the life-or-death situation, writing:
Officers responded around 2:25 p.m. on May 16 to the 5 Below parking lot after receiving a report of a dog inside a car with the windows barely cracked. Temperatures outside exceeded 92 degrees, and officers saw the black puppy panting heavily and showing signs of distress.
Lady Lake Police officers Jeffrey Burns and Michael Tisdell located the dog inside a car parked in direct sunlight without shade. The puppy’s tongue was extended, and she was crying and scratching at the windows in an attempt to escape. Officers determined the vehicle was not running and the interior was extremely hot.
Officers were able to remove the overheated pup from the car and got her water and into an air-conditioned patrol car.
The owner, identified as Yeneese Morejon, 26, was arrested for animal cruelty. When an officer told her that she was being arrested for animal cruelty, she responded, “how is it cruelty?” To which the officer asked, “you want to sit in that hot car?”
Morejon was transported to the Lake County Jail.
