Sioux Falls, S.D. – A South Dakota man had to be taken to a hospital for treatment after being bitten by a cobra inside his home. As reported by KELO Sioux Falls, the man had multiple venomous stakes in his apartment and he was bitten after knocking over a plastic tote containing two cobras.
The man, whose condition is unknown, was bitten after stepping on one of the snakes that was knocked out of the tote. Responding officers found two cobras loose in the apartment, and one Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake still contained.
All of the snakes were seized and taken to Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. Officials remind the public that it is illegal to own venomous snakes in the state due to the obvious danger they present.

What possesses people to have these dangerous animals as pets? Is it to prove how “trendy”, “different”, “edgy” they are?
I remember one story about a woman who had lots of venomous snakes in her residence. Somehow, some got out, swarmed her, and she did not survive.
I also remember a show that was on TV about the “snake-charmer” preachers down South. No surprise that a few of them were bitten; some survived and a few Did Not.
I’m no “tree-hugger”, but, sadly, many of these animals are “dumped” into a non-native environment when the person/s realise that the animal/s are not going to be a pet? Examples: The Everglades–Florida DNR is struggling to remove the non-native animals that have been dumped there., as the eco-system is being harmed. “Chance” the alligator found in the lagoon in Chicago’s Humboldt Park. And so many more discovered by the authorities in residences.. Nutria that people were breeding for their fur didn’t properly contain them, and now they’re harming the waterways in Oregon, Maryland (who had a bounty on them), the Gulf States, and others. Once the animals are seized, the authorities have to get medical care, then locate a zoo/shelter/sanctuary that will accept the animal/s as well as arrange for proper transportation.
