Bexar County, Texas – Police in Bexar County arrested a man after discovering a starved horse living in squalor. According to the sheriff’s office, Reyes Guillen was contacted on October 22 when deputies were searching for a suspect who was involved in a deadly conduct incident. Guillen allowed the police to conduct their search.
In a release, the authorities said:
During the search for the suspect deputies observed a white horse in a small pen lying on its side in a mound of feces with no food, water, or proper shelter. The horse showed extreme signs of starvation, by protruding vertebrae, ribs, hip bones, dry skin, thinning hair, and approximately six open sores throughout the horses body.
Guillen claimed the horse was not his and that it had wandered onto his property six days ago. The release states:
However, as our Special Enforcement Unit who handles estray calls and animal cruelty investigations continued their investigation in coordination with Bexar County Animal Control, it was determined and evident that the circumstances of animal cruelty were present.
During the investigation, several stolen trailers were also found.
The horse was rescued and taken to an area veterinarian for care. Reyes Guillen was transported to the Bexar County Jail and booked on charges for Animal cruelty and his three counts for Theft of Property $2,500<$30k.
