Columbiana County, Ohio – Eleven dogs have been saved from squalid conditions at a home in Ohio. According to the Columbiana County Humane Society, the rescue mission began after a a dog running at large complaint was made to the East Liverpool Police Department.
According to the Humane Society, Deputy Adkins with the local animal control, reached out for help after the authorities determined that an undetermined number of dogs were living in squalid conditions at a residence. The animal welfare organization said the homeowner was “nervous” when they opened the door, and they tried to blame the home’s condition on “remodeling.”
In a social media post, the agency said:
Due to the strong odor and the visible conditions of the home, I informed the owner that I needed to enter to check on the animals. Initially, the complaint stated that there were only 4 to 5 dogs inside, but by the end of the investigation, it turned out that there were actually 11.
Describing the horrific conditions the dogs were being subjected to inside:
The home was in such unsanitary conditions that the cages were stuck to the floor with feces, which had hardened like concrete against the carpet. There was no water available for any of the dogs, and all of them appeared to be severely dehydrated.

One dog at the home, sick with a multitude of issues, had to be humanely euthanized.
The conditions inside were hazardous to both humans and animals. The organization describes the shocking odor the animals were suffering through:
According to an ammonia meter, the ammonia level in the house was a staggering 61 parts per million. My eyes began to burn, and it was difficult to breathe even with a mask on. Every area of the house was covered with debris, trash, fecal matter, and urine stains—there was a complete mess no matter where I stepped; it was unavoidable.

The homeowner attempted to keep some of the dogs, but they were informed that every dog was being removed from the unsanitary conditions.
