Seagrove, North Carolina – A devastating fire ripped through a barn at Callicutt Stables in Seagrove on Sunday, killing 36 of the 43 horses who were boarded there. As reported by the Charlotte Observer, responding firefighters were met with a fully engulfed 15,000 square foot barn shortly before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
In a news release, the Randolph County Department of Emergency Services said, “Despite the efforts of firefighters, the structure was considered a total loss. At the time of the fire 43 horses were boarded within the structure and 36 perished as a result of the fire.”
A fundraiser created for the family highlights the importance Callicutt Stables has had in the area:
For decades, this barn has stood as more than just a structure — it has been a cornerstone of the walking horse community. Under its roof, generations of exceptional Tennessee Walking Horses were raised, trained, and always appreciated. Riders from near and far came here searching for their next show partner, their next trail companion, or simply just loved to come hang around! For many of us, Callicutt Stables wasn’t just a barn. It was a home away from home.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

I agree. There should be automatic locks, fire alarms and sprinklers in there, so once the fire alarm goes off, all the stables unlock and sprinklers go off. I’m in tears with what 36 horses had to endure literally being burned alive. The screams that had to be coming from the barn. No one thought of breaking the outside walls down, so they could get out? I would have ran my damn car through there just to try and save them. The owners to those poor horses, you have my Deepest Condolences and Please, Please take them to court. That’s the worst way to lose a pet/family member. All the money those people bring in, they should have updated it with sprinklers, automatic locks and fire alarms. Rest in peace babies, rest in peace…..
how many times does this need to happen???? there should be automatic unlocking devices too! can’t imagine the fright the horses endured; too many horses in that barn too
Yes. Humans are stupid
Being a former owner of a horse barn I find that that horse barn that burnt down was not equipped with a sprinkler system how utterly painful and heartbreaking for those horses that had a subject to that horrible fire. May they rest in peace.😡😔

Exactly to Stop Animal Abusers Globally!!! My exact sentiments – this person should be thrown into flames himself to show him what those poor horses felt as they cooked to death the no good piece of shit!!!
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
They purposely were murdered and owners should kill the person who was overseeing their horses and didn’t have proper sprinklers systems – this should be a law. Disgusting pieces of shit people don’t give a damn about the animals , just the money they get from them!!!
They suck.
The owners of the horses that perished should sue the owners !!! Hopefully they’ll be prosecuted for negligence!!! The barn was not equipped to house that many horses!!

Those horses shouldn’t have been in an environment without sprinklers. Negligence by the owners. Bless those horses. Heartbreaking what they endured. Those responsible need to know how it feels so perhaps they are more thoughtful in the future.
FIRE AFTER FIRE AFTER FIRE BURNING ANIMALS TO DEATH-CAN THERE BE A MORE HORRIFIC WAY TO DIE-WHY THE FUCK WITH ALLLLLLLLLLL THE TECHNOLOGY WE HAVE TODAY-CAN BARNS NOT BE REQUIRED TO HAVE SMOKE ALARMS THAT ALERT THE OWNER THEWIR BARN IS ON FIRE-THEY ARE FILLED WITH COMBUSTIBLES-FUCKING DUHHH-BY THEIR FUCKING PHONE??? HUH???? YOU ALL PROTECT YOUR INANIMATE OBJECTS WITH YOUR LIFE BUT ANIMALS??? LIVING BEINGS STUCK WITH NO ESCAPE IN BARNS BURNING TO DEATH….IS JUST MEH……REALLY PEOPLE???
With that many horses being stabled there, where were the sprinklers?? There should ALWAYS be a sprinkler system and other protocol in place for such a large facility. Saddens me that these innocent souls lost their lives.
I agree with the other commenters..why was this supposedly “wonderful” barn not equipped with sprinklers? Since it seemingly stood so long, why wasn’t it modernized?? Those poor, precious horses suffered terribly. 😢
so very sad they should have had someone there watching over them
