Bernalillo County, New Mexico – When a big boy named Atlas found himself too tired to finish a difficult hike in New Mexico, deputies with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office came to his rescue. This week, the sheriff’s office shared photos of the rescue mission, noting that their Open Space deputies were responsible for saving the 120-130 lb dog’s life.
In a social media post, the agency said Atlas was placed in a Stokes basket for the four-mile, five-hour long trip down the mountain.
Atlas secured for transport
Throughout the lengthy trek, Atlas remained calm. Sgt. Starr noted that Atlas had earned the title of “the goodest boy we have ever rescued.”
The Sheriff’s Office reminded dog owners to come prepared when hiking with their pets:
When hiking with your pets, bring plenty of water, watch for signs of exhaustion and remember that the trip back can be just as challenging as the climb up. Great work by everyone who helped get this very big boy home safely!
