Palestine, Texas – Two Texas women were arrested and are facing charges after a puppy died inside a cage that was left in the direct sunlight. According to the Palestine Police Department, Daisy Guity, 29, and Lisbeth Guity, 31, were arrested on July 21 after the puppy’s untimely demise.
In a release, the police said:
Just before 4 pm on July 21st, Officers from the Palestine Police Department and Animal Control responded to a residence in the 200 blk of W. Park. A caller reported that a puppy was locked in a cage in direct sunlight with no shade or water. Officers arrived on scene and found that the dog was deceased.
Adding:
These subjects reported that they placed the puppy in the cage around 1 pm before leaving the residence. The heat index in Palestine on Tuesday was well over 100 degrees.
PPD Chief Mark Harcrow said:
“It is the responsibility of pet owners to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their pets. We are experiencing extreme heat in this Texas summer. Anyone that is found to not be providing adequate shade and water to their pets will be arrested and prosecuted.”
Veterinarians describe heatstroke as one of the most painful and preventable forms of suffering an animal can endure. As a dog’s body overheats, it struggles desperately to cool itself before progressing to dehydration, organ failure, collapse, and death if help does not arrive in time.
Anderson County Criminal District Attorney Allyson Mitchell also added, “Inexcusable crimes against animals that rely on humans to care for them will not be tolerated in our community. The DA’s office looks forward to working with the PPD to bring justice for this animal.”
