Canby, Oregon – Police in Canby, Oregon, shot and killed a young bear who was near the Clackamas County Fairgrounds. According to witnesses, the bear cub was in a tree on Saturday – not far from people attending an exhibition at the fairgrounds.
A woman who watched the drama unfold tells KPTV News:
“And he was just hanging out there. And previously, one of our neighbors said that the police had told them, people need to stay away. Otherwise, if a group of people start gathering, then we’re going to have to take action and protect the public. And so at that point, there had been some people starting to gather wondering what was going on, which I guess happens. But it was sad because then the bear, I did watch it start to scramble down the tree. And then we heard the shots rang out.”
Police explained that tranquilizing a bear near large groups of people is dangerous, which is why lethal measures were used instead.
Those who watched the scene were saddened by the bear cub’s death. Rest in peace little one.
